Reviving the soul of Madhubani Art through every stroke
Namaste. My name is Rupam, and I’m a Madhubani artist rediscovering her rhythm after many years. Before my marriage, I was known for my intricate brushwork and unique use of colours on silk cloth. Art was my breath—it gave me joy, pride, and identity.
I was born and brought up in Madhubani, a town famous for its rich artistic heritage. Due to my father's transferable job, we moved around Madhubani and nearby places quite often. From an early age, I was drawn to the vibrant world of colors and storytelling that Madhubani art represents.
As a child, driven by curiosity, I learned how to create colors using natural ingredients — vegetables, flowers, and minerals — by observing the elder women in our village. These colours gave life to the stories we painted on paper, walls, and silk cloth.
I was once known locally for my artwork, but after marriage, life took a different turn. I devoted myself fully to raising a family and nurturing my two beautiful children. Now that my children are grown and responsibilities lighter, I've picked up the brush again. I’m amazed how naturally my hands still move with the brush, how instinctively the colors still speak to me. The detailing, the patience—it all came back as if it never left me.
This second innings feels like a blessing. I call my journey Madhuroop—a name that reflects the sweetness and form of my art and my story.
Madhubani art is a centuries-old folk painting style that originated in the Mithila region of India. It is known for its intricate patterns, bright colors, and deeply symbolic motifs.
Mithila, the larger cultural region that includes Madhubani, has long been a cradle of art, literature, and devotion. The women of Mithila have traditionally been the torchbearers of this art form — painting their homes, fabrics, and paper with stories of gods, nature, and life itself. Learn more about Mithila.
I'm now selling my artworks online, primarily through Etsy. Each piece you see is not just a painting—it's a piece of my soul, a whisper of tradition, and a testament to resilience.
